Why I Love Cloth Diapering

I’ve only shared a little bit that I cloth diaper….I shared back a couple of months ago my super easy DIY cloth wipes and I hope to share in another post some things that have helped my cloth diapering journey. But, I’m not a 100%, full time cloth-diapering Mama. Why? Well, I don’t have enough cloth yet. Ha! Also, I really have no desire to do it full time, at least at this time in my life. But there are SO many reasons to cloth diaper, even doing it part-time and I want to share with you some of the reasons why I chose to cloth diaper (must to the dismay of my husband- at first!).

cloth-diapering

It’s cheaper.

Ohhhhh, yeah frugal Mamas. I got my cloth stash (about 16 diapers) either gently used (from friends) or new for $5 or less per diaper. Yes, I’ve spent less than $100 in my cloth diapers & products for it, and have saved more than that in only 6 months!! The great thing about the diapers, is that if you take good care of them, they’ll last you kid after kid!

It’s healthier.

Here’s where I’m going to get a little crunchy on you. Did you know there are tons of yucky chemicals in your baby’s diaper? Right up against your baby’s important body parts for years, day in and day out….gross. Yeah, yeah, there are chemicals everywhere, but since I’m trying my best to rid them from my house, shouldn’t I atleast try to lighten the load of them up against my baby all the time? I feel so much better when my son is in his cloth….and, seriously. It has to feel better, too!

It’s easier on his bum.

Caleb has never had a bad case of diaper rash or anything like that, but he has gotten red a few times. After a day in cloth, it has completely gone away. Again I say- wouldn’t cloth feel better than diaper material?

It’s easier on the environment.

No, I’m not a huge go-green tree hugger, but it makes sense. There is less waste when you can reuse over & over again the same cloth diaper (and that’s why it’s cheaper, too….).

Before I had my son I thought I would never cloth diaper….but the more I talked to ladies who actually did it and read up on it (and read all the yuckies in diapers!!) I knew I wanted to cloth as often as I could. No, I don’t cloth through the night, or on long town trips. I also don’t cloth while traveling (some people don’t like you using their washing machine for them….imagine that! lol). But I cloth diaper on days we’re home or have little arrends to run and I am so thankful to have been introduced to this way to lessen our toxins in our home!

cloth-diaper

Do you cloth diaper? Do you do it full time or part time? Are you interested in cloth diapering?

Sincerely,
Hannah Diane

How I Use Oils on my Baby

All throughout my pregnancy, I used Young Living oils for feeling my best. If I had a longer birth experience, I totally would have used them for that, too! 😉 So it is totally natural for me to use oils on my baby….here are my favorites & why I use them!

oils-on-my-baby

When using oils on your baby (or child), V6 or coconut oil will become your BFF. Known as a carrier oil, it helps make the oils “go further” and it also helps dilute some of the hotter oils for baby’s sensitive skin.

I have used these 6 oils since my son was 6hrs old. He is currently a year old and, although we add different oils for different occasions, these are STILL my go-to oils for him!

I use 1 drop of R.C. diluted in V6 on his chest. RC stands for Respiratory Care.

A drop of Valor (or Valor II) on the base of his neck after a chiropractic adjustment.

2-3 drops of Gentle Baby on his head before bed. This is great for skin- it definitely helps his cradle cap, and it’s also a calming, relaxing scent.

Diluted Thieves on his feet! I do this before bed, when he gets up, and before we go into town. A baby can use all the immune system support he can get!

Tranquil & Rutavala; this is the bedtime duo! If I forget to apply these to Caleb, he doesn’t sleep/nap as soundly, nor does he go to sleep quite as quickly! I roll Tranquil on behind his ears and Rutavala on his big toes.

I hope this helps you on your path of a healthy lifestyle! If you want more information on Young Living, check out my page here, or if you’re ready to jump feet first into a oily lifestyle & join my community, you can sign up HERE.

Staying Motivated to Workout on Vacation

Happy Friday! I’ve been out-of-town this week visiting family. It’s been fun and definitely a “growing” experience being a Momma. Traveling with a 9 month old for 8 hours in the car is NOT fun. Ahem.

Workout
One thing I did not want to do is completely go off of Trim Healthy Mama, and not exercise. I definitely feel better, and it keeps my Lyme’s Disease under control when I workout & eat right. In a few weeks I’ll share how to travel doing THM, but today I want to share ways to incorporate physical exercise into your trip or vacation.
1// Go for a walk or hike. This is pretty self-explanatory. Lol. Just get moving!

2// Do quick & effective HIIT or circuit workouts like my 15 Minute Workout  or my Legs & Booty workout. These are short & not easy (ha!), so perfect for being on vacation!

3// Find a short YouTube workout video! Since we don’t have internet at home (yes, no internet!), I love trying out new workouts on YouTube on a hotel or friend’s wifi!

4// If your days are jammed-packed with fun things to do, get up early, or do a quick workout before bed. Something is better than nothing!

5// Relax and remember to jump back 100% when you get home!

What are your tips to staying active on vacation?

Sincerely,
Hannah Diane

Orange & Cranberry Smoothie

Today I want to share with y’all one of my new favorite snacks. An orange & cranberry smoothie! (Yes, I really do drink smoothies a lot!) I got very addicted to cranberries this past Christmas season, but I am just now getting around to posting some of the yummy recipes!

Orange and Cranberry Smoothie

So, you want a quick, easy and yummy smoothie perfect for before your workout? Here it is!

Orange & Cranberry Smoothie
Ingredients:
1 orange
1/4 cup cranberries (I used frozen)
1 cup almond milk
1/2 scoop Young Living or Trim Healthy Mama‘s protein powder (those are my favorites!)
1/2 cup Greek yogurt (or cottage cheese)
pinch of salt
sweetener of choice (I use either 3 doonks of THM‘s stevia extract or a few squirts of a liquid stevia)
1-2 tsp. chia seeds
splash of vanilla extract
3 drops of Young Living‘s tangerine or orange oil (this really makes the drink!)

Orange and Cran Smoothie

Blend with ice and enjoy the energy it gives you!

What’s your favorite pre-workout snack? Here are some of my other favorite pre or post-workout snacks!

Surviving the First Month Postpartum

And just like that, Caleb is a month old.  Sometimes it feels like he was just born, and sometimes it feels like we’ve had him forever. Crazy, huh?

Having a newborn is amazing. It’s really, really hard, but amazing. I am so thankful the Lord chose us to be parents before we ever thought we would.

There were quite a few things I did every day to help keep my sanity during the first month after Caleb was born. Most days I did it by myself, and no one was around to help me. But sometimes my mom, mother in law, or grandma were around to give me time to myself, and for that, I am very grateful! My grandmother warned me about Postpartum Depression (or Baby Blues, as she calls them), and since I’ve had a history of anxiety problems, I really didn’t want to get PPD. (I wasn’t worried, but I believe doing these “normal” things helped keep my sanity!)

Postpartum

#1- Shower every day! No, seriously. I’m not kidding. All these people warned me that I would go days, even weeks, without showering. I know they were kidding, kind of, but I was determined not to do that. Something about getting clean just makes you feel better about yourself and more person-like. Yes, I even showered the day Caleb was born.

#2- Change out of your pajamas. Even if it’s into yoga pants or lounge pants, get out of the clothes you slept in. It’ll make you feel better, I promise.

#3- Stretch & lightly exercise. I started this after about three days PP. Just start with light stretches, then add walking, or easy floor exercises to help those muscles go back into place.

#4- Chose one chore (or two) to get done. Okay, so I’m a neat freak. I h-a-t-e seeing my house dirty and a mess. By the third week PP I was keeping the house like normal, but the first two weeks I just focused on one or two things to get done the whole day. Like, wash the dishes or sweep the floor.

#5- Eat & drink lots. Seriously, eat tons of healthy food. That’s why I love the Trim Healthy Mama lifestyle, because if I felt like I needed carbs, I ate healthy carbs, and if I needed both fats and carbs, I did that too! But really, you need to eat and DRINK lots to keep your body healthy and your milk supply up.

#6- Rest. Don’t overdo it. I have a problem with that. Because Postpartum Depression is a very real thing, and I didn’t want to get it, I didn’t rest unless I felt like I needed it. Making me be in bed/on the couch for 6 weeks resting would have sent me straight into a bad case of PPD. Just saying. Definitely rest, but only when you need it.

#7- Get outside (if the weather’s nice). With the baby or without the baby. Doesn’t matter. Although, the sun would do Baby good, too. Some days we both spent time outside, and sometimes I just sat on the back porch during nap time, enjoying the quiet.

#8- Play music. I love music, so during Caleb’s “awake and happy” times, we listened to hymns the whole time. I sang along, and he enjoyed the music and me being silly (although, that probably won’t last long! Ha).

#9- Use Young Living Oils. Seriously. They are so versatile! And perfectly safe for my little one’s skin. We loved using them for all kinds of normal PP & newborn issues, and diffusing them for uplifting spirits. So thankful for them!

What would you add to the list? What helped you through the first month Postpartum?

Sincerely,
Hannah Diane

Why I Love Doing the THM Plan

Happy Tuesday, everyone! I am officially ready for our little Caleb to come! It feels like I have absolutely no room left! I’ve been having lots of really hard, strong contractions….so hopefully he’s going to want to come out soon! Ha!

THM Plan While Pregnant

Today I am super excited to share with you why I love the THM plan….and why it’s the perfect plan for a pregnant woman, too.

First, a little about my pregnancy so far….

*When I got pregnant I was a little “fluffy”- not skinny any more, but not chunky yet. I could still fit into some of my 4’s, but I was wearing mostly 6’s by that point. (My lowest was a 0/2).  Here’s a picture of me at 12 weeks…..

11866407_742352435891916_5156862959208627308_n

At 14 weeks I got hit with a terrible bout of morning sickness….that lasted until 20ish weeks. I couldn’t keep anything in me, so I just started eating….well, anything that would stay in me. That led to a weight gain of ~16lbs by week 28. That’s not terrible, I know, but I’m 5’1″ and have a thick build- that extra weight was not exactly in my stomach.

So, I started the THM plan. It basically has you eating carbs and fats…separately. An “E-nergizing” meal has protein and carbs, and a “S-atisfying” meal has fat and proteins. There are also “Fuel Pull” meals that focus on just protein and low carbs & fats or there are “Cross-over” meals that have both good carbs and fats together.

From weeks 28 to 36, I was eating either “S” or “E” meals, with a “FP” snack every hour. That kept me full without gaining extra (un-needed) weight. Since 36 weeks I can’t keep a lot of food down, or eat a lot at one time, so I’ve been eating all “CO”s to help keep me full. At 38 weeks and 2 days, I have only gained 17lbs this whole pregnancy and feel SO good.

By eating more “Cross-over” meals for pregnant/nursing mothers, it helps keep (or give) you more energy to get through the day….and we all know we can always use more energy!

Being pregnant in the South….in the Summer….has had it’s difficulties, but having lots of smoothies and swimming a lot has helped keep me in shape, cooled off, and feeling good this whole time. Here are two of my favorite smoothie recipes:

Berry Spinach SmoothieTHM Mock Mocha Shake What else has helped me feeling good is working out….even if it’s just for a short time, or just stretching. It feels so good on my growing body, and it’s helping me stay trim and in shape for after Caleb comes! (I wrote some blog posts on just that: 5 Favorite Pregnancy Workout DVDs and Favorite Workout DVDs for the Third Trimester).

The Trim Healthy Mama plan is definitely not just for women! My husband does it with me, even though he doesn’t have an ounce of fat on his body. I give him just cross-over meals….but he says he has a lot more energy and feels better over-all eating this way.

My “little” brother and also my brother in law are semi-doing this plan along with exercising (they’re both seniors in HS), and my brother has lost around 20lbs and my brother in law has lost over 35lbs. I’m so proud of them both!

If you are thinking about trying out the plan, I would suggest reading the book- at least twice! Then join some of the official Facebook groups for accountability and tons of recipe ideas.

Have you tried the Trim Healthy Mama plan? Did you follow any plan while you were pregnant?

Sincerely,
Hannah Diane

DIY Pregnancy “Belly Oil”

Everyone knows that with pregnancy comes stretching, changing skin. It’s no fun- even if it is for a good cause….like growing a precious little baby. Today I want to share with you how I make my own belly oil to rub into my stretching skin twice a day. It’s so wonderful!

DIY Pregnancy Belly Oil

For this DIY oil, you are going to need a jar to store your mixture in, coconut oil, Young Living’s Lavender Oil, and Young Living’s Gentle Baby oil.

This is a super easy recipe! First, you want to scoop (or pour, if it is warm) the coconut oil into your jar. Depending on the size of your jar, add 5-10 drops of each essential oil. Mix well. If your coconut oil is staying liquid and you want a more “cream” feeling, keep the mixture in the refrigerator. Runny oil doesn’t bother me, so I just keep it on the bathroom counter. This mixture of oils is SO wonderful for healthy skin!

Have you ever made your own belly oil? What did you do for stretching pregnancy skin?

Sincerely,
Hannah Diane
